Origin of Ice Kacang

Having originated from the one and only Malaysia, Ice Kacang is undoubtedly a dessert dish that we are of proud to call our own. Of course, such great recipes are meant to be shared, where Ice Kacang has become a well-established dish in our neighbouring countries Singapore and Brunei as well. Today, the popularity of Ice Kacang has even grown to the point of reaching the other side of the globe in the United States.

Traditionally, a hand-cranked ice shaving machine is used to produce the shaved ice of the dessert, but now, the use of a motorised version of this machine is more common. Although Ice Kacang may be slowly losing its nostalgic touch, the flavour remains unchanged. So, there is no need to lament on this lost as, on the contrary, flavours are developing—new forms of toppings being introduced. With that said, let us enlighten you to a basic Ice Kacang recipe!

In terms of shaving the ice, we recommend you to use a blender with a sturdy blade or an ice shaver. Otherwise, you may be better off buying some pre-made shaved ice from the supermarket (you don’t want any broken blender blades, do you?)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of ice cubes or crushed ice

  • ¼ cup of dark brown sugar

  • 1/3 cup of water

  • 3 drops of red colouring (optional)

  • 3 drops of red colouring (optional)

  • 2 tablespoons of condensed milk or evaporated milk

  • 2 tablespoons of canned red beans (in kernels)

  • 2 tablespoons of canned sweet corn (cream-style)

  • 2 tablespoons of grass jelly piece

Directions

  • Start by preparing the syrup. In a small saucepan, add brown sugar, water, and red colouring. Then, heat it over medium heat. Once the sugar melts and bubbles start appearing on the syrup, turn off the heat, and set the saucepan aside to cool.
  • Next, move on to preparing the shaved ice (you can omit this step if you have bought some pre-made shaved ice from the supermarket). In a blender, add the ice cubes or crushed ice and let it until it is shaved completely.
  • Lastly, transfer the shaved ice to a bowl, and drizzle 2 tablespoons of syrup on top followed by all the other toppings. When that is done, your Ice Kacang is complete! Serve them immediately to have them before it starts melting.
